The modernization of the Russia’s nuclear forces: geopolitical repositioning

Abstract

This article has as its object of study the process of modernization of the nuclear apparatus of the Russian Armed Forces, a pioneering effort that put into operation the first nuclear weapons with hypersonic propulsion in the history of mankind. Through the use of a qualitative approach, a bibliographic review was made from specialized literature in Political Science and Military History, as well as a docu-ment analysis of several archives and official publications. The research objectives deal with the cause-effect relationship of this modernization process. The analysis is divided into 5 points, the first is an analysis of Russian military history and the development of Moscow’s geopolitical vision; the second addresses the strategic importance of the Nuclear Forces in Russian defense policy; the third exposes the specificities of the implementation of the modernization program; the fourth deals with the innovations of Russian military science, comparing them with the US nuclear apparatus; finally, the fifth addresses the modernization of existing means. In its conclusions, the article highlights the importance of investments in Nuclear Forces for the repositioning of Moscow in the international balance of power, as well as brings reflections on the prognosis of a new arms race between the great powers in the geopolitical scope.
