Abstract

This paper aims to stress the concept of “grand strategy” to Lusophone readers. Starting with a bibliographic survey, we show that few sources in Portuguese comprehensively address the complexity of the concept. We want, at first, to present the diversity of definitions of the “grand strategy”, mainly from Anglo-Saxon sources. Then, we will make a survey of the meanings attributed to the grand strategy, from the moment the concept was formulated (beginning of the 20th century) until now. Finally, we want to highlight the Brazilian approach of the concept, mainly in the way of assessing how modern states sought to define their strategic objectives.
